Bolivar Peninsula Coastal Resources
Texas is blessed to have 367 miles of Gulf-fronting beaches and over 3,300 miles of bay shoreline. With nearly two-thirds of the state’s Gulf shoreline protected in parks, wildlife refuges and natural areas, the Texas coast is a natural wonder. It is home to blue crabs, oysters, pelicans, shrimp, whooping cranes, and the rare Kemp’s ridley sea turtle. Twenty-five percent of Texans now live in the 18-county coastal region.

As the population of the state increases, the number of Texans living near and using the coast will increase. Economic, recreational, and other benefits of the coast to the entire state will improve proportionately provided the state addresses today’s coastal issues.

The Texas Open Beaches Act (OBA) allows the public to have access to the Gulf beaches of Texas using a public beach easement. This beach easement is a rolling easement, set at the mean high tide line.

The most successful project implemented by the State to protect and enhance the Texas Coastline is on the Bolivar Peninsula in the Rollover Pass area in Gilchrist. Already new resort developments are being constructed, including the popular Audubon Village Resort that is also using Hurricane Resistant homes designed by Bolivar's own Crown Team Texas.

US Army Corp of EngineersRollover Pass Beach Nourishment Project
The Galveston District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) performs routine maintenance dredging of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway that includes yearly dredging of the stretch near Rollover Pass. This project joins CEPRA and Galveston County funds with the USACE dredging cycle to use the dredged material beneficially to nourish the public beaches on the east and west side of the pass.

The project provides protection of public beach and public infrastructure using a natural beach restoration technique. The project uses the cost-effective and beneficial use of dredged material. Project Cost: $793,448
