Bolivar Peninsula Mardi Gras

Mardi GrasMardi Gras (French for "Fat Tuesday") is the day before Ash Wednesday, and is also called "Shrove Tuesday" or "Pancake Day". It is the final day of Carnival. It is a celebration that is held just before the beginning of the Christian liturgical season of Lent. Carnival traditions were brought over to North America from Europe along with the first colonists.

The krewes are the actual carnival society organizations. The membership pay in dues to maintain the society, finance the krewe's activities including parading, organizing and staging the carnival balls, and funding the construction of their costumes and props.

The lighthouse krewe of bolivar peninsula mission is to perpetuate and continue mardi gras and traditions on our bolivar peninsula and to raise money for our community charities.

Our first parade was in 1991 and Anne Willis, the Queen, rode parade style as A.C. Hilton, our Sheriff, drove his convertible through the subdivisions of Crystal Beach, calling on all to join in the festivities, then our second parade consisted of a few floats and the Krewe Official Float, with six Revelers in the back of a pickup truck, prancing and dancing the whole course of the Parade to Cajun Music! And we started our Parade that year in Bolivar- 10 miles to Crystal Beach! The cows in the pastures were amused. Since then it has continued to improve each year to our current Mardi Gras celebrations which are as good as they get anywhere.

Crab Festival

Cars on BeachThe Texas Crab Festival is held in Crystal Beach on the Bolivar peninsula and is an annual event held on Mother's Day weekend in the spring. It is a great small town carnival-like celebration, and it seems that the whole local community is in attendance all 3 days!

You find endless amounts of food such as boiled crawfish, fried gator, corn dogs, and of course, crab meat prepared in numerous different fashions! There are small carnival rides and events for the kids, and throughout the day and evening there are live bands playing, generally of the country or classic rock variety.

Admission is only $8 for adults, and free for kids under 12. Or buy a 3 day wristband for $15. And all of the refreshments and rides are very cheap. If you enjoy small town and local festivals, this one is not to miss!

Endless Summer Bash

Summer MemoriesBolivar Peninsula Annual Endless Summer Bash on Labor Day Weekend. The Bash includes:
  • golf tournament,
  • chili cook off,
  • kids fishing tournament,
  • live entertainment every night
Since 1884, the first Monday in September has been a holiday in the US, as a tribute to workers. To most people in North America, however, Labor Day is above all the last-blast of summer fun, and for many school kids, the last day of freedom before Back to School. And even though many school districts now start classes in August, Labor Day long weekend is still a five-star farewell to summer time.
Summer Bash
Crystaland Christmas

Bolivar ChristmasCrystaland Christmas, Beach Parade and Christmas Party & Lighting Contest on the Bolivar Peninsula every December to celebrate Christmas on the shores of Crystal Beach.

It's a great time to be on the peninsula with mostly locals for the friendliest coastal Christmas experience you'll ever have.

Since this time of year is in the off-season rental period, you can find oceanfront vacation home rentals available at much lower prices and actually find homes available - even for a spur of the moment visit to the coast. During the summer season most vacation home rentals are booked for the year by February.
