Memorial Day is a national holiday initially established to honor and remember to the nation’s thousands of veterans and fallen soldiers. These days, it looks like Memorial Day is a three-day weekend that marks the start of summer. However, the history of this American Holiday goes back to the Civil War and is an important reminder of those who died serving their country.

You can celebrate this Memorial Day, aka the unofficial start of summer, on the Bolivar Peninsula with beach barbeques, day drinking, and camping trips.
Try going to a park and having a lunch or get together with friends and relatives.
Most parks are free to visit, which helps your holiday budget. Outdoor parks are a great place to take kids, and most allow pets. |
At most parks you can have a cook out to celebrate. If this option is not available, just take some cold foods that travel well. Be sure and bring your coolers and plenty of ice.
Many parks have playgrounds and sports areas to get lots of activities in. This is fun and healthy. Parks are a great place to unwind and have fun.
Memorial Day is also a nice time to visit some of Bolivar’s 23 miles beaches. You can plan a one day beach trip or make it a weekend holiday. The weather is usually mild and pleasant at this time of year. The summer crowd is not out yet and your trip will be enjoyable.
A fishing trip is also a wonderful way to celebrate Memorial Day.
You can go to Bolivar's East Bay or offshore and have a fine time. Fishing is a fantastic family activity. From the shore at Gilchrist, a dock or from a boat, a fishing trip cannot be beat. It is exciting and relaxing.
You never know what you will catch. Even if you do not catch fish, the time spent with family and friends is priceless. This is also an adventure that you can go on alone. |

Camping on the beach is another great way to celebrate Memorial Day. The nice weather is on your side, the bugs are usually not too bad and there are many areas on Bolivar available to enjoy. This is another way to spend quality time with relatives and friends without spending too much money. You can use a camper or tent. You can also just sleep under the stars in your sleeping bag. With a fire and great company, this makes a wonderful family bonding experience.
Don’t forget the fireworks, a Bolivar tradition. Fireworks are enjoyed by all ages and readily available on the Peninsula. So load up the family and head on down to the Bolivar Peninsula. |
