A baseball field is a good idea, but my friends and I were hoping proceeds would go to help families or businesses in the Boliver area that might need help due to Ike. i haven't been down since the hurricane, but I have heard the area is still bad and there hasn't been a whole lot of government assistance. There are a lot of us that want to come. We just wish it were for a better cause. |

Yes, there is grass! The area is still a little torn up but for the most part things look great. The proceeds are going to a baseball field but this is something that WILL help the community substainally. Come on out and enjoy the cold beer, live music, and the GREAT people that are still here. |

Super excited about this happening this year. Especially since the "storm" and the community will have its chance to show hell or higher water the party must go on. Can I get some pricing information?

Festivals combine to showcase Bolivar recovery
When the equipment used to set up the Bolivar Chamber of Commerce’s long-running Bolivar Crab Festival was demolished, the Stingaree Music Festival, another annual peninsula event, offered to supply an arsenal of materials so both events can succeed in Hurricane Ike’s wake.
The two festivals will merge this weekend to present Bolivar’s Back to showcase the peninsula’s progress after Hurricane Ike and to give residents a chance to relax and party.
“Three months ago, it was such an overwhelming task … especially not having anything to do it with,” Bolivar Chamber of Commerce President Anne Willis said. “We’ve lost everything we used for (23) years. Our stage was gone. We thought that both of us can do it together.”
The festival will be today through Sunday, at Gregory Park, 2292 state Highway 87, in Port Bolivar.
Proceeds from the event will go toward the chamber of commerce’s Economic Recovery Fund for the building of a ballpark at Gregory Park, Willis said. The group hopes to raise $20,000 from admission and food sales.
“A bunch of us have worked very, very hard to bring Bolivar back,” Willis, a 50-year resident of Bolivar, said.
Fifty to 60 percent of the businesses on the peninsula have reopened, she said.
Eight teams will compete in a crab cookoff, and visitors can choose to taste the amateur chef’s creations or fair from multiple food booths. There will be about 40 vendor booths featuring the work of local artists. A Builder’s Fair, including 50 local home builders, will be on hand to discuss remodeling needs, Willis said.
“Were calling it Bolivar’s Back because a lot of people think it’s all gone. This is a reopening,” said Mike Crowley, who manages musician Hayes Carll, the Stingaree Music Festival’s founder.
Ben Morris and The Great American Boxcars, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Jason Allen and Ryan Bingham will take the stage today, while Sisters Morales, Jesse Dayton, Hayes Carll and The Magpies will play Saturday. All the artists have waved their fees and are working for expenses only.
“People should try and take some time and come over and really help these folks,” Crowley said. These people are working 12 to 15 hours a day trying to get on with their lives, and they really need a party. It’s a party with a purpose.”
When: Friday, 6 p.m. to midnight; Saturday, 10 a.m. to midnight; Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Cost: Friday, $10; Saturday, $12; Sunday, $8; Three-day wristband, $30; kids 12 and younger get in free.
Advance tickets available at www.frontgatetickets.com.
